Planets in Trine
Trines are formed by planets in signs that share an element. For example, planets in Leo and Aries are trined because Leo and Aries share the element of Fire. Planets in Cancer and Pisces share the element of water. This makes it easier for those planets to harmonise in their expression.
Planets in Opposition
An opposition is formed by planets at opposite sides of the zodiac. Every sign has an opposite sign and planets in those signs are challenged by their polarities. For example, a planet in loving, harmonious Libra is challenged by an opposing planet in headstrong, competitive Aries. Finding a balance between the two can present difficulties.
Good and bad aspects
Today Astrologers no longer talk about "good" or "bad" aspects. You should look at the planets and signs involved and see how they work together, and whether this is a challenging or a harmonious relationship. A so-called easy aspect could also make it too easy to indulge in some bad habits. A challenging aspect could cause enough frustration to spur you on to make great changes in your own life, or on a large scale. Many famous people have a lot of challenging/hard aspects.
Genius
Genius is more the ability to overcome obstacles and solve problems creatively than anything else. Albert Einstein was considered retarded as a child and a poor student. But he had a Mercury/Saturn conjunction in Aries that showed his determination to learn and a powerful Neptune/Chiron conjunction in the 10th that aided his creative visualization. Encourage your child to think creatively. Wherever Uranus is in your chart, is where you may be a genius of sorts or at least you have an unusual approach to that area that might be considered ahead of the crowd.
Degrees
A degree is a "signpost" on the wheel of a horoscope that marks where the planet or astrological point is placed. The circle of the horoscope is 360 degrees, marked off into 12 sectors of 30 degrees each. The beginning is 0 Aries. There is no 30 degrees. After 29 the sectors start again at 0 of the following sign as in 29 Aries, 0 Taurus. The degrees are always counted from 0 at the beginning of each sector, at the start of the sign that rules that sector. Thus, 90 degrees on the horoscope is read as 0 degrees Cancer, and the wheel does not end at 360 degrees, but at 29 Pisces (the last sign of the zodiac).
Aspect Symbols
You can recognize the astrological aspects by their symbols:
CONJUNCTION: a Circle with a line leading off the North West arc. Looks like a bomb!
OPPOSITION: A line with two circles either end. Looks like barbells.
TRINE: A triangle.
SQUARE: A square!
SEXTILE: Looks like an asterisk (a star).
SEMI-SEXTILE: a V with a line underneath.
INCONJUNCT: An inverted V with a line on top.
SEMI-SQUARE: An arrowhead pointing left.
Planets in Square
Squares are formed by planets in signs that have different elements. For example, a planet in Aries is in the Fire element, while a planet in Cancer is in the Water element. There is a challenge in getting these two different elemental expressions to work well together.
Planets in Sextile
Sextiles are formed by planets only 60 degrees apart. This represents an avenue of opportunity for these signs to work together. For example, a planet in Aquarius will be sextile to a planet in Aries or Sagittarius. The energies of these signs will work well together. A planet in Pisces will be sextile to a planet in Capricorn or Taurus, which will help ground the Piscean flights of fancy
Planets in conjunction
Planets form a conjunction when they are in the same sign, at the same degree or separated by no more that 5-6 degrees. For example, If Venus is at 5 degrees Sagittarius and Mars is at 10 degrees sagittarius, Venus and Mars are in conjunction.
The Minor Aspects
The other aspects used in Astrology are:
SEMI-SEXTILE: the planets are 30 degrees apart, that is, in neighbouring signs. This is a mild aspect.
SEMI-SQUARE: the planets are 45 degrees apart, that is, a sign and a half. This is a mildly challenging aspect.
INCONJUNCT: the planets are 150 degrees apart, that is, 5 signs apart. This is a difficult aspect.
The Aspects
There are five major aspects everyone should know.
THE CONJUNCTION: When two planets are at the same degree in the same sign. Thus, The Moon at 4 degrees Aries and Mercury at 4 degrees Aries is a conjunction. This is a powerful aspect.
THE SEXTILE: When Planets are at the same degree two signs apart. Thus Mars at 10 degrees Aries and Jupiter at 10 degrees Gemini are sextile. This aspect signifies opportunity.
THE SQUARE: When planets are at the same degree three signs apart. Thus The Sun at 15 degrees of Aries and the Moon at 15 degrees of Cancer are in square aspect. This aspect signifies challenges.
THE TRINE: When planets are at the same degree four signs apart. Thus Venus at 22 Aries and Mars at 22 Leo is a trine. This aspect signifies harmony.
OPPOSITION: When planets are at the same degree in opposite sign. This Saturn at 8 degrees Aries and the Moon at 8 degrees Libra are in opposition. This aspect signifies difficulty.
Planets in Aspect
An aspect between planets occurs when they are at the same degree of a sign, even though they may be in different signs. For example, if Venus is at 23 degrees of Taurus in the chart, and Mars is at 23 degrees of Capricorn, or any other sign, the planets are said to be "in aspect".
